Easy-To-Use “Kindling Splitter”
“It’s a safe, fast way to get kindling for your wood stove or fireplace,” says Dan Jacobson, Pequot Lakes, Minn.
His portable kindling splitter consists of a 6-in. long, 2-in. wide steel wedge bolted on top of a 16-in. high, 3-in. square wood post that’s mounted on a sturdy metal base. The top part of the post slants downward on all 4 sides and has metal deflectors screwed onto it.
The operator uses one hand to hold the wood on top of the wedge, and his other hand to strike the wood.
The unit weighs 20 lbs. and is fitted with a carrying handle and a hammer-holding bracket.
“This kind of wedge is normally used with a sledge hammer to split very big logs laying on the ground. I think the way I’m using it is safer,” says Jacobson.
The kindling splitter comes with the wedge, base, and 3-1b. plastic hammer. Sells for $120 plus S&H.
