Fun Fire Fireplace Is First Of Its Kind
Meet the Fun Fire - a furnace, cookstove, conversation piece and freestanding fireplace all wrapped up in one sparkling package.
"It's more efficient than any other fireplace on the market today," says Don Lewis, vice president of marketing for Richardson's Fireplaces, Florissant, Mo., manufacturer of the new Twin Spin Fun Fire. "The Fun Fire burns wood or coal and has achieved efficiency ratings as high as 90%, compared to conventional fireplaces which operate at heating efficiencies consistently lower than 10%."
Contributing to the Fun Fire's high efficiency is its patented updraft design. Air is drawn in at the base of the pedestal, keeping a cushion of cool air between the fire and firebox door, Lewis points out. "Because of this updraft design, the freestanding unit can be installed directly on a carpet or bare floor. No hearth is needed except on the fuel door side," according to Lewis.
The Fun Fire can also be used to prepare foods. Four loaves of bread, 30 medium sized potatoes or a 10 1b. roast can be baked in the 1.5 cu. ft. stainless steel oven. Other foods can be cooked on top of the oven which heats up to 500 degrees.
Heat output of the Fun Fire is estimated at 80,000 to 100,000 Btu. It's made of 16 ga. steel, weighs 250 lbs., and stands 40 in. tall, 34 in. long and 22 in. wide. Required clearances are 16 in. from a combustible wall, 24 in. on either side, zero floor clearance and 8 in. clearance for corner installations.
The glassed-in firebox accommodates logs up to 15 in. Because of its high burning efficiency, very few ashes accumulate in the Fun Fire, making it easy to maintain, the manufacturer points out. The special glass is designed to withstand temperatures up to 2700 degrees.
To demonstrate its strength, dealers pound on the glass firebox with a log.
Suggested retail is $995.
