Cadillac Drive-Over Grain Pit
"Our drive-over grain pit has `Cadillac' features that make unloading grain easier and faster than ever," says John Wolf, Hospers, Iowa.
Wolf made the frame of the drive-over pit from 10-in. channel iron. It measures 4 ft. wide by 10 ft. long and has two hoppers fashioned out of 7-ga. steel - one for center dump wagons and trucks and the other for side dump wagons. The cross auger is 8 in. in dia. and the incline auger is 10 in. in dia. with a 22 degree incline. The 36-in. wide, 72-in. long ramps are made from a series of 2 by 2 by 1/4-in. thick angle irons spaced 5 in. apart.
"The ramps are skid proof and self-cleaning and work much better than ramps made from safety plate steel be-cause tires won't slip on them at all," says Wolf. "Mud from the tires falls between the angle irons. Other drive-over pits are flush with the top, but our pit has a raised lip made from 1 1/4-in. high, 1/4-in. thick steel that keeps water from running into the pit. The steel grate is recessed into the pit to keep grain from splashing out. The 11-ga. auger tubes are enclosed on top to eliminate auger splath and to in-crease the capacity. I recommend a 7 1/2 to 10 hp motor be used to handle the 10-in. dia. incline auger. It has a l 1/2-in. hanger bearing with an outside grease zerk.
"Each side of the base frame has a 1-in. high channel iron skid that keeps moisture away and allows the pit to be pulled on the ground without dragging a lot of dirt. The wheels can be easily removed with a moveable screw jack. Sells for about $3,650."
