Chainsaw Attachment Grinds Tree Stumps

The Terminator Stump Grinder is a compact attachment that converts a standard Stihl chainsaw into a stump grinder. It was designed by Patrick Watts, who sought to address a common industry challenge: the lack of a portable, efficient solution for stump removal, especially in spaces with limited access.
Unlike traditional small grinders, which can be awkward to transport, the Terminator is designed for portability. It bolts directly to compatible Stihl chainsaw powerheads, specifically the 500i, 660, 661, 880 and 881 models, replacing the bar and chain. Although currently limited to Stihl, other brands may be considered in the future.
The device uses a belt-driven system to transfer power from the chainsaw to a grinding wheel equipped with two easily replaceable tungsten carbide cutter teeth.
“A single-wheeled leg supports the weight of the unit, enabling precise plunge-cut grinding without the operator getting overly tired,” says Simon Bradshaw of the Terminator Sales Team. “A typical 12 to 14-in. dia. stump can be ground below the surface in under 10 min. Larger stumps are also manageable, though they require additional time.”
Featuring a compact design and weighing just 55 lbs, the Terminator is 33 lbs lighter than the closest competing attachment. It fits easily in most vehicles and can be quickly disassembled for transport. The central leg is bolt-free for rapid deployment, and the two quick-change cutter teeth can be rotated to expose new edges, reducing downtime.
The Terminator excels where larger machines can’t reach. It’s ideal for tackling small to medium-sized stumps in urban yards and hard-to-access locations.
“The tool goes wherever the operator can walk,” Bradshaw says. “It’s a game-changer for jobs in challenging spaces or slopes.”
Removing stumps prevents rot, disease and pest infestations that can harm other plants. Contractors or landowners can expand their services by using the Terminator to eliminate hazards and generate additional income.
Designed and built in Oxfordshire, England, the Terminator ships directly to the U.S. Plans for Canadian distribution are underway.
The attachment is priced at $3,400 plus S&H, excluding the powerhead.
