Electric Snow Melting Mats
You can keep snow and ice off walkways, stairs, and even your driveway with these new heated snow melting mats.
HeatTrak electric mats measure 20 in. wide by 60 in. long and are made with an electrically-operated heating element sandwiched between 2 protective surfaces made of non-slip rubber. They plug into a standard 120-volt outlet and can be connected to each other to extend their reach. The mats melt snow at a rate of about 2 in. per hr. The water from the melted snow evaporates off the mat.
The mats come in a variety of sizes. Walkway mats are 20 in. wide by up to 60 in. long; stairway mats 10 in. wide by up to 48 in. long.
The mats can be used independently or connected together using built-in watertight connector cables, to create a continuous system of snow melting mats.
According to the company, the mats are effective down to 5 degrees below zero, and the cost to operate 9 walkway mats connected together will generally be less than $1 per day.
The mats can be used on most surfaces including concrete, asphalt, stone and wood decks but not plastic or composite.
A 20 by 60-in. walkway mat sells for $139.95 plus S&H. Other walkway mat sizes are available.
A 10 by 48-in. stairway mat sells for $89.95.
The company says the mats should not be covered or used indoors, or used for animals or animal houses. They’re for foot traffic and wheelchairs only and can’t be driven on by a car. However, a 20-ft. long driveway mat is available.
