Wi-Fi Backup Camera Uses Phone As Monitor
This “simple” new backup camera has no wires and you don’t need a separate monitor. Best of all, it’s designed to sell for just over $100.
With a patented magnetic base, the wi-fi camera can be moved easily between vehicles, trucks and farm equipment. Your Android or iPhone becomes your monitor after downloading a free app.
The new backup camera should be available by mid April, says Mike Deschenes, one of the owners at Rampage Products.
The 2 1/2-in. dia. camera swivels to point in any direction – to watch a trailer behind a truck or grain cart to the side, for example. A light source in the housing brightens the camera viewing area. With 4 strong magnets, the camera mounts securely to any metal surface and is easy to move to another vehicle.
Because the patented camera has its own wi-fi source, there are no monthly service fees. Just touch the app on your smartphone pad to see what the camera sees. The signal is good for 100 ft., Deschenes says, which means it could double at home as a baby monitor.
Rechargeable lithium batteries that last 4 hours and have a good charge-holding shelf life power the camera.
Deschenes expects the camera will retail for between $100 and $120. Check the Rampage website for automotive and farm supply stores that will sell the camera.
