Dick Thompson, Boone, Iowa, mounts Gandy seed boxes on his moldboard plow frame to broadcast winter rye onto fall-plowed ground. The boxes are connected by a fiberglass rod that's driven by a hydraulic motor. Plastic down tubes spread 20 lbs. of rye seed per acre. An attached harrow incorporates the seed, which supresses weeds and controls erosion.
