The pedal propeller drive and seat assembly clamp to the boat transom like any motor and without any modification. "It requires no gasoline, oil or batteries, is not messy, has no problems starting, takes very little upkeep, has a longer life than most motors, and is an excellent exercise ma-chine. Because it's non-polluting, it can be used on small lakes where motors are not allowed. It was designed with a minimum of gearing and a large propeller. Performance varies from boat to boat but in a 14-ft. aluminum fishing boat with 4 or 5 people, an average person is able to pedal at trolling speeds all day. It's easier than walking. In a canoe, one person can pedal as fast as two average people would be able to paddle," says Benjamin.
"You can pedal a boat faster than you can row or paddle it with our machine and you'll get less tired because leg muscles are much stronger than arm muscles. You also have the advantage of looking in the direction of travel and your hands are free for fishing and other activities. Even small children can run and control it," says Benjamin, noting that a pair of handles alongside the seat are used to steer the unit, which is constructed of aluminum, stainless steel and corrosion-proofed steel parts.
"We've had a working prototype for the past two summers and have received a fantastic amount of interest from those who have seen it in action. People holler at us from shore wanting to know what kind of motor we've got," says Benjamin, who sells the pedal drive system for $595.
