Solar Hutch Keeps Calves Healthy
Roger Walter lost 25 Holstein calves from disease during the winter of 1982 in his calf barn despite extensive treatment with drugs.
"In February, with an 80? below zero wind chill, our veterinarian decided that if the calves were going to die anyway, we might as well try moving them outside into makeshift hutches made of straw and ply-wood. After a week, we had four healthy, thriving calves. Now, almost 5 years later with a death loss of just one calf in 350 births, we're totally sold on the idea of raising calves out in the cold," says Walter.
