Axle extension for A-C combines COMBINES Modifications 9-4-32 "Allis Chalmers doesn't offer axle extensions for its L, L2, M, and M2 Series combines," says Roger Heins, who makes the extensions in his Sutton, Neb., welding shop.
Axle extensions, available from 10 to 18 in., extend the wheel base without turning the wheels around, which Heins says puts too much strain on the stub axle and bearing in the final drive. The extensions move everything out, and include an extended drive axle. They mount in between the bull gear and axle housing and are held in place by pillow block bearings and couplers.
The do-it-yourself conversion job takes about 3 hrs. per side. A complete kit, including bolts, sells for $1,650. The combine can be easily converted back to narrow width.
