New Hearth Carpet Won't Burn Or Smoke
A fireproof carpet for use in front of fireplaces is new from Rockwood Cotton Hearth Carpet, Hampton, Virg.
"The 100% cotton carpet is treated with Arnox, a fire retardant that makes the material fireproof," explains Berk Webb, national sales manager for the firm. "The backing of the carpet is Class A latex, the most fireproof latex available.
"The carpet has undergone 3 independent tests, including 2 Underwriter Lab tests, as well as company tests," says Webb. "It passed all the tests and exceeds hospital and nursing home standards. The carpet can withstand live fire and even red hot coals without igniting. It may char but it won't ignite."
For cleaning, the carpet can be vacuumed or swept but it should never be washed or dry cleaned because, after repeated cleanings, the retardant will wash out, explains Webb. "If the carpet becomes charred, just send it back to us. We'll clean and retreat it for $5."
A Navajo design carpet 26 in. by 45 in. sells for $44. A 24 in. by 48 in. carpet, available in 3 different colors, sells for $38 while an 18 in. by 48 in. carpet, available in 7 different colors, sells for $32.
