Twister Truck Dumps Sideways
Hottest new truck in the industrial market is the "Twister" from American Alloy Steel, Tucker, Ga. The bed rotates 180 degrees, allowing the box to be raised and dumped at any angle, whether completely sideways, straight back or anywhere in between on the 180 degree axis.
"The Twister, with its rotating bed, can do anything a conventional dump body is designed to do, plus more," says Bill Wilson, of American Alloy Steel. He notes that the rotating dump bed adapts to most standard truck frames. Cost to equip a bare truck with a 10 yd. box, complete with rotating dump bed, cylinders and the necessary controls, is right at $10,000, installed.
Although designed primarily for industrial use, Wilson believes farmers and ranches will find special uses for the Twister. One possibility for example, might be to equip it for fence line bunk feeding, or to unload grain or silage into chutes, augers or hoppers which aren't accessible with a conventional rear-dump truck.
Other key features of the Twister, according to Wilson, include:
• Tailgate has hydraulic latch which won't allow hoist cylinder to operate unless latches are open.
• Bed is mechanically locked in any position around the 180 degree turn.
• With the tailgate open and the truck in maximum "side dump" position, the bed will maintain its center of gravity close to the truck's center of gravity, and will produce no appreciable overturning forces on the truck up to a 20? grade.
• Hydraulic controls are on a central control panel in the cab so that the bed can be rotated and dumped simultaneously while the truck is moving.
