Simplified Scale For Feed Mixers
New from Steiner Corp., Orrville, Ohio, is a simplified hydraulic scale for feed mixers that "gives you the accuracy of an electronic scale for a lot less money, and which requires little or no maintenance," explains Richard Steiner, president.
The new-style scale is hydraulic in that it uses a hydraulic cylinder. However, it doesn't operate under hydraulic pressure. Instead, it uses mechanical liquid weighing. The entire feed load is tied into a 2 in. by 6 in. cylinder which controls the fluid level on the scale. The bigger the load, the more liquid is displaced through the hose leading to the calibrated chart which gives the simulated weight in pounds. The chart is easily read right from the tractor or truck seat, or from the silo or feed room.
Once properly calibrated, the scale is accurate to about 98%, says Steiner. The liquid can be windshield washer fluid, or antifreeze.
At present, the new-style "liquid" scale adapts only to stationary feed mixers. "We're working on a similar unit for portable feed mixers," Steiner told FARM SHOW. Sells for $945.
