Wood Carver Creates 155 Ft Log Chain
Retired Kansas farmer James Porter, of Riverton, is attempting to whittle his way into the Guinness Book of World Records with a "log" chain that he's carving out of basswood.
So far, the still-growing wooden chain stretches 155 ft. and is made up of 860 of the 2- to 3-in. long links that Porter has whittled.
He started his chain back in the summer of 1984. Since then, he's been working on it in his spare time - something he says he has plenty of now that he's retired.
Each link takes about 40 min. to complete. Once he has an 8-ft. long section carved out, he attaches it to the main chain with a clevis that is also carved out of wood. Besides clevises, he also carves out wooden hooks, swivels and even boxes with balls inside and adds them to the chain.
Porter, who's dulled more blades on his carving knife than he cares to count, plans to keep whittling way making what may be the world's longest "log" chain even longer. "I want to enter it as a world record. I don't know of anyone who has done anything like this before," he notes.
