“Smart” Tankless Water Heaters
Early versions of tankless water heaters didn’t win over many U.S. buyers. But today’s smart tankless water heaters seem to be changing that.

“The old models worked more like a BBQ grill, with water flowing across it,” explains Gene Sola, owner of EZ Tankless in Fowler, IN. “The new ones are closer to a fuel-injected car. They’re computerized and much smarter.”

There’s no standing pilot light; they self-ignite, and the flame adjusts based on water demand. Even $500 models can deliver hot water for two showers running nonstop.

Besides using Propane (LPG) or Natural Gas, they only need 2 amps at 120V AC to power the exhaust fan and controls. Setup is simple with a 4-inch dual-chamber forced air intake/exhaust vent (included).

EZ Tankless also sells battery-ignited outdoor models (pictured is the EZ 101) starting at $185, as well as its larger version, the EZ 202 ($365) - ideal for barns, hunting cabins, camping, or other remote off-grid spots.

To help the heater last 20 years or more, Sola advises filtering incoming water. His website offers in-depth videos and instructions for filtering, installation, and maintaining a tankless heater system.
