World’s Largest Chicken?
Young FARM SHOW reader Jayden White has what he believes might be a record-breaking chicken.
Jayden won his Cornish Cross chick “Canton” in 2021 at the Canton, Texas County Fair. He brought Canton home and kept the chick indoors until he grew too large, at which point the bird was moved to the chicken coop. However, Canton avoided his feathered flock mates and preferred to spend his time with the goats. He would lounge with them all day, only moving back to the chicken coop in the evening. As his heft and personality grew, Canton’s family knew this chicken would never make it to the dinner table. Instead, they embraced him as their oversized mascot.
“Canton is loved by all who get to meet him,” explains Jayden’s mother, Anna White. “He’s a farm favorite for everyone that visits.”
To date, Canton weighs in at almost 26 lbs., which beats the weight set by Big Boy, a Plymouth Rock and “Giant” Cornish Cross featured in Vol. 37, No. 2.
The family expects Canton to live out the rest of his days in happy companionship with his goat friends and a steady diet of chicken pellets from the local feed plant.
While Jayden doesn’t know for sure whether his fair prize is a true record-breaker, there’s no denying he’s brought an oversized amount of fun to his farm family.
