He Grew An 83-Ft. Tall Corn Plant
Plant breeder Jason Karl has done it again.
He’s been featured in FARM SHOW twice before for world record tall cornstalks. The first time was in 2011 when he broke the world record with a 34-ft. tall plant (Vol. 35, No. 6). The second time was in 2016 when he broke the record again with a 45-ft. tall stalk inside a 55-ft. tall greenhouse support structure, shown at right (Vol. 40, No. 6).
Karl’s tall plants were bred from a tropical strain of corn. “I have made a genotype that will keep growing forever. The 83-ft. plant (featured above) grew for 1 1/2 years and would have kept growing forever,” he says, noting that he grew the tall plant horizontally.
The tall growth of the plant was totally due to genetics. Karl points out that you could fertilize and water an ordinary corn stalk and it would only get to a certain point before it died off.
