New Bulk Hopper Speeds Filling of Planter Boxes
Arkansas farmer Richard Conley, of Blytheville, won't lift one bag of seed when he plants his 1,200 acres of corn and soybeans this spring.
He'll be handling bulk seed in a nurse tank he designed to fit on top of his planter and to keep his planter boxes filled. Besides the convenience of automatic feed, the bulk seed unit adds weight over the planter wheels for a better seeding job.
Conley's seed hopper is mounted on his 6-row planter with 30 in. row spacing. He says it will fit most conventional planters, including the Deere Max-Emerge, International or Allis-Chalmers. It works best on a 3-pt. hitch.
"I can plant 45 to 50 acres non-stop with the bulk hopper," says Conley. "It would hold 100 bu. but we don't fill it to the top, so there's no danger of seed spilling out."
He says you sit up high enough on the tractor that you can see into the hopper. You can put a lid on it in wet weather. You can also get side braces for working on sloping land.
Conley designed and built the hopper and holds a patent on it. He has built several of them but is looking for a manufacturer to make them in a larger volume.
Conley says the hopper works for soybeans, corn or any other hard seed.
