Helikites: New Way To Control Birds
Four of these new "Helikites" from England will protect 60 acres of crops at a cost of about $550. according to the manufacturer.
It consits of a lightweight nylon kite with a round pocket of fabric on back into which you slip a disposable helium baloon. The balloon holds everything up in the air and the kite catches the wind, moving it around unpredictably. Colored streamers add to the deterent effect.
Once installed, the kits cost nothing to operate, unlike bird scaring guns, and they operate in total silence. Occassionally the kit will be driven to the ground during a heavy rain storm, but will relaunch itself once the storm lets up. Balloons are re-placed as needed.
