In 2002, Empire Products Company in Northern Wisconsin did a study and extensive controlled air-box testing with large multi-blade riding lawn mowers to determine the most effective method to remove fresh grass clippings from the underside of large mower decks. Using a common garden hose, it was determined that inducing water into the spinning blades (while parked) from beneath the blades allowed the water to enter into the rising air vortex at a 45 degree angle, thus utilizing the power of the mower engine and spinning blades to greatly increase the air/water velocity to the underside and outer inside edges of the mower deck.
After only a few minutes of operation, the underside of the mower deck will look like it was power washed. It was found that inducing water from a top water fitting, as many mower’s have or side of the mower deck did not have effective cleaning results. After testing, final design, patent application, manufacturing tooling, assembly quality, and packaging were complete, marketing started in 2005.
When done mowing, drive the mower to a flat washing area, (i.e. hard driveway), set the brakes, raise the mower deck to the highest position and shut off the engine. Following directions included, slide the washer connected to a garden hose under the mower deck.
The washer can accommodate mower decks from 32 in. up to 60 in. Larger mower decks can be cleaned by doing one half of the mower deck at a time. To clean the deck, turn on the water hose, then sitting on the mower, engage the mower blades and run at high or mowing speed for a maximum air vortex and cleaning power. The washer will not strike the spinning blades due to the reverse force of the hose water pressure exiting the three cleaning nozzles, thus holding it down. Run the mower for a few minutes or until the mower deck is clean. It is recommended that the mower deck be cleaned after each mowing, before damp grass clippings dry and harden. A clean mower deck works and cuts much better than one clogged with dried grass clippings.
