"Fold-Up" Portable Chicken Coop
“Our new free-standing portable chicken enclosure lets you take your chickens anywhere so they can range on grass, yet stay protected. It’s lightweight, assembles without tools, and can be easily moved,” says inventor Chris Huseman, Murray McMurray Hatchery, Webster City, Iowa.
The free-standing “Peck and Play” is made from strong nylon mesh material that’s held up by flexible, sturdy support frame. It measures 3 ft. wide by 5 ft. 8 in. long and has two zippered openings on top that allow you to quickly put in and take out your chickens. Six metal stakes secure it to the ground. The enclosure folds up quickly and fits into a convenient carrying bag that’s only 15 in. high and wide.
“It’s designed as a temporary enclosure, not a permanent chicken coop, and is a great way to let chickens out in your yard in a controlled area. It’s small enough that you can fold it up and put it in your car,” says Huseman. “It works great to put newly hatched chicks out on grass, and to keep your chickens in while you’re cleaning their permanent coop.
“If you have only a few chickens you can fold the enclosure in half and still have an opening on top. That way you can reach down and pick the chickens up without them running around the entire enclosure.
“I came up with the idea when I was looking for a chicken coop that my 8-year-old daughter could easily move around and also put away.”
The Peck and Play sells for $49.99 plus S&H.
