"One-Acre Farmer"
I was visiting with a fellow the other day from rural Minnesota who told me he’s a “One-Acre Farmer”. It turns out he has been growing one acre of corn for several years. He burns the corn he harvests in a stove that heats both his home and shop. What he did was to buy a small, older planter and a small self-propelled combine at local farm sales. Being a professional mechanic, he didn’t have much trouble getting both of them running well enough to plant and harvest one acre of corn. He figures that with the amount of use they get, both machines should last forever. And even though the price of corn is high now, he likes the fact that he basically grows his own fuel and gets to farm a little bit.
