Corn Borer Crusher Mounts On Harvester MISCELLANEOUS EQUIPMENT Miscellaneous 31-3-26 Edward Island, is the invasion of corn borers that attack potato stems. Research scientist Dr. Christine Noronha at the Crops and Livestock Research Center in Charlottetown developed a mechanical device to "crush" the larva of the corn borer. It mounts on the back right corner of the potato harvester and crushes the stems as the crop is harvested, killing the larva before the plants are laid back onto the field. The crusher consists of a combination of street sweeper brushes and metal rollers. Noronha says field tests have shown that one use virtually wipes out an infestation. Any borers left should be wiped out the second year, she says. The crusher was built by a local shop that could build more if there was demand.
