Foam Marker Attachment Makes A Wider, Easier-To-See Strip
"It extrudes flat ribbons of foam that stay put on top of the vegetation instead of falling off onto the ground. Works great with Roundup Ready soybeans," says Tom Loftus about his new "Wide-Guide" foamer attachment.
The 6-in. long, T-shaped, PVC unit clamps onto the end of the sprayer's existing foam drop hose and has three 1 1/4-in. long slots lined up in a row. The foam squeezes out of the slots in three flat, narrow ribbons that cover a total width of about 6 in.
"It's a simple but effective way to keep the foam on top of the crop where it's easy to see," says Loftus. "Conventional hoses drop balls of foam at intervals. The problem is that the foam often rolls off the leaves and onto the ground so that when you turn at the end of the field and come back there's nothing to see. It can be a big problem if you grow Roundup Ready beans. You want to spray the beans when they're as tall as possible so that they'll reach full canopy before any later-emerging weeds can grow through, ensuring that you won't have to spray again. If you spray before the canopy is full, you'll kill any exposed weeds. However, more weeds will grow through the crop later so you'll have to spray again, which effectively doubles your weed control cost.
"When you use the Wide-Guide you can always count on having a highly visible mark, so you can wait until your Roundup Ready soybeans are at the optimum growth stage before you apply Roundup and save money and time."
Models are available to fit drop hoses from 3/4 to 2 in. in diameter. Sells for less than $25 per set plus S&H.
