Remote-Controlled Combine Sieve Adjuster
A new remote-controlled sieve adjuster works on-the-go to compensate for changing field and crop conditions, keeping grain loss to an absolute minimum.
"On most combines, operators have to stop the machine, crawl into the back, and manually adjust the sieves, something that's becoming increasingly difficult with chaff spreaders and choppers in the way," says Gerald Wiebe of Factory Direct International, manufacturer. "They have to do so every time they want to try a different setting. Our electronic control lets you try a variety of different settings without stopping."
The device consists of an electronic drive mechanism housed in a 4 by 4 by 7-in. metal box that mounts in the combine on the cab right in line with the sieves. The mechanism has either a solid steel drive rod fitted with ball joints on each end or a push-pull cable system (depending on make of combine) that attaches to the sieves, allowing fine adjustments of as little as 1/32 in. The device is controlled from a switch and digital read-out, which tells you the exact size of sieve openings.
"It lets you adjust for changing conditions where you might not otherwise bother if you have to stop your combine and crawl under to move the sieve openings," Wiebe notes.
Installation takes about three hours, he says.
Mounting hardware is custom-built so the device fits virtually any make and model combine. Factory Direct International needs exact combine specs with each order.
  Sells for $1,195 (Canadian).
