Power Wedge Drops Tree Where You Want It
If you've ever cut down a big tree and tried to get it to fall into a certain spot, you know it's not as easy as it looks.
German manufacturer Gerhard Eckart says he's solved the problem with a new "powered wedge" that fits into a narrow saw slot and wedges open the slot, pushing a tree over in whatever direction you de-sire.
You still cut out a wedge on the side where you want the tree to drop but you don't cut through as far on the other side. Once the final cut is made, you insert the narrow tip of the jaws and crank on the wedge's ratchet handle to open the jaws.
"It makes the job practically effortless and safe and saves a lot of extra work that might result if the tree did not land where you want," says Eckart. The wedge weighs about 18 lbs.
