You can make a strong, lightweight bench for pennies using plastic 5-gal. pails. I've made them up to 5 ft. long and 12 in. wide. Just run a piece of 1/2-in. plywood across the top of the pails and put two round ply-wood discs inside the pails. Screw the top sheet in place through the top of the pails.
