Picture yourself on a deck that's 20 ft. above the ground and totally detached from your house, with a spiral staircase leading up to it from below. That's the kind of deck Randy and Jean Keck recently built in their back yard in Fairview, Oklahoma. They like it so much Randy has started building similar decks for others.

Keck recently sent FARM SHOW photos of the octagonal-shaped deck, which measures 14 ft. wide by 18 ft. long. It's built from cedar wood with a steel frame. It's supported by a 24-in. dia. steel pipe and a pair of steel legs. A 72-in. dia. spiral staircase wraps around the pipe. The steps and flooring on the deck are made from Trex -- a mix of recycled plastic and wood.

"It's a great way to get away from it all, and the view is fantastic," says Keck. "We live on the edge of town, with a field on one side so there's an unobstructed view. It's really nice at night because you're up above all the lights. There's an LP gas fireplace on the deck as well as lounge chairs and a TV. We wanted a low maintenance deck which is why we used Trex flooring. The frame, support pipe, and staircase are covered by low maintenance DuPont Centari paint.

"We built it in our shop and used a crane to erect it. The pipe is made from 24-in. dia., 3/8-in. thick well casing. The bottom of the pipe has a 1-in. thick steel plate bolted to it and is set in concrete 4 ft. deep in the ground."

Keck says he's willing to build both kinds of decks for others. A 20-ft. elevated deck's price includes installation and about three yards of concrete at the base.
