Pallet Wagon Perfect For Gardener's Needs
"I needed a wagon to haul mulch and other materials to my 100 by 134-ft. garden, but all I had was an old boat trailer," says Dale Richter. "It was 4 ft. wide and 8 ft. long so I realized a pallet or skid would sit on it perfectly."
He used 2 pallets for the floor. He cut others in half to make the wagon sides. The wagon ended up 4 by 8 ft. and 3 to 4 ft. deep.
Richter says the wagon makes it easy to keep his 200 horseradish plants well mulched. This past fall he made nearly 80 pints of horseradish, some with jalapeno and habanero peppers ground up and added to the horseradish before adding vinegar.
"One guy ordered it as hot as I could make it," says Richter.
The wagon isn't the first time Richter put pallets to service for his gardening. Each year he raises Indian corn and strawberry popcorn for sale to local markets as fall decorations.
"I get $2.50 for 2 stalks that I sell with the husks pushed back from the ear," explains Richter. "One year a nearby city ordered 50 bundles to decorate their lamp posts."
Concerned that deer would ravage his corn before he could deliver it, Richter used pallets to build a corn shed. The 8-ft. wide, 8-ft. high and 16-ft. long shelter kept his corn safe as he cut, tied the stalks and set them inside to cure.
"When they were gone, I had an empty shed, so I added 4 ft. more to the length, gabled the roof, and put shingles on it," says Richter. "It is just the right size for my 26 hp compact tractor."
