Home Blood Pressure Kit
Popularity of do-it-yourself blood pressure kits has prompted medical and health authorities to push for rules governing their use.
"Because they aren't calibrated regularly, some users might get an abnormal reading and get unduly concerned about it," says a - spokesman for the American Medical Association. "In other cases, an incorrect reading could lead to a false sense of security."  .
One of the leading suppliers of home blood pressure kits is Lumiscope, headquartered in New York, N.Y. It offers an electronic blood pressure unit called the Lumi-Tronic II.
Here's how the company describes its simple, four-step operation:
1. Hold palm up. Wrap the selfclosing cuff around your arm.
2. Pump on the auto-valve until it reads 200 on the meter.
3. Release the bulb. When the blue light flashes and the electronic beep sounds, take your systolic (high) range reading.
4. The beeps and flashes will continue. When they stop, take your diastolic reading.
Suggested retail of the _LumiTronic is $69.95.
