A Great Use Of The Internet
If you get tired of eating in restaurants when traveling for fun or work-related reasons, check out this new website that helps you find a home-cooked meal wherever you are.
EatWith.com matches travelers with local residents. Co-founder Guy Michlin got the idea during a trip to Crete, where a friend arranged for his group to have dinner with a local family. “It was an amazing experience for us, not just the food but also connecting with people who lived in the area we were visiting,” says Michlin. When he got home, he and a business partner started working on the new business.
Host families on EatWith have to go through a vetting process as far as their food offerings, interpersonal skills, and the cleanliness of their homes. On the website (www.eatwith.com) hosts are rated by visitors. In the future, visitors may also be rated.
There are other person-to-person websites cropping up that connect travelers with locals: www.vayable.com matches tourists with local residents who act as tour guides. Another site, www.airbnb.com, is a network of people who rent out rooms in their homes to travelers, everything from a night on a couch in the living room (very cheap) to a week-long takeover of a regular family’s house.
