Plastic "Shield" Protects Tires On Deere Planters
“Our new ‘tire saver’ kit is designed to stop swing arm and tire damage on Deere 7100, 7300 and 1710 3-pt. mounted corn planters. It prevents loose drive chains from causing a lot of costly damage,” says Paul Leedahl, Agassiz Fabrication, LLC, Kindred, N. Dak.
The unit is designed to contain the drivewheel chains from the tire up to the driveshaft that controls the planter’s seed meters. The chain runs inside a UHMW plastic chain guide that’s bolted onto a length of 3-in. angle iron, bolted onto the planter’s original frame using existing holes in the frame.
“It solves a big problem on these planters that no one else has addressed,” says Leedahl. “After time the chain starts to get loose and slaps around so much that it can wear through the tire’s sidewall. If the chain catches in the tire, it will bend the swing arm. The loose chain also can damage the driveshaft sprocket and bend the planter’s framework. It can even affect the accuracy of the seed meter and mess up your seed population.
“We installed a few units last year with no problems. The shields sell for $86 a pair, which I think is reasonable. You can’t buy a tire for less than $150, and a bent frame costs $400 or more to replace. Replacement sprockets cost about $40 apiece.”
