Home Built Mini Wood Silo CROP STORAGE Silos (50) 17-2-18 "I built a 32 by 22-ft. storage barn a few years ago and I wanted a silo to go along-side it that would be in the right proportion. I got the idea of using 6 and 7-ft. dia. wooden wire spools to do the job," says Carl Park, Hobart, Ind. "I got the spools for free from local phone and electric companies. I took them apart because I wanted to use spool ends to form the inside of silo and curved boards off inner drums to nail to the outside. "I used eight 6-ft. spool ends for the inner structure and I took the center drum boards off six 7-ft. spools. I built the silo in sections on the ground, running pipe up through the center of the spool ends. I put doors on the back of the silo so I can store tools and other equipment inside the silo. I made `Lazy Susan' turntables inside the silo to make it easy to get at equipment stored inside. "Because the curved boards that went around the outside of the silo were not tongue and groove, I had to put 90 lb. black felt over the inside of the walls so the cracks between boards wouldn't show. To simulate rods running around the silo, I ran heavy black electrical cable over the cracks between silo sections."
