Old Tires Make Handy Portable "Gate Posts"
Old tires can be used to make low-cost portable "gate posts", making it easy to set up gates anywhere, says Fraser Summers, Fonthill, Ontario.

Old Tires Make Handy Portable "Gate Posts" FENCING Gates 24-1-27 Old tires can be used to make low-cost portable "gate posts", making it easy to set up gates anywhere, says Fraser Summers, Fonthill, Ontario.
He simply places a wooden post inside an old implement tire and then fills the tire with concrete. He then mounts hinges on each side of the post so gates can be hung from either side. He uses a front-end loader to move the posts.
"They work great for changing the configuration of cattle pens. We've made about 20 of them for use on our farm," says Summers. "We made them because we got tired of building permanent pens for different age dairy cattle and then having the pens the wrong size for what we needed the next year. By using steel gates, self-locking feeder wagons, and a couple of portable mangers with locking headgates we can quickly make up inside or outside pens for any size group of calves, heifers or dry cows."
